How Cadmium Telluride Enables Buildings to Generate Their Own Power

At the tip of Hengli Island in Nansha, Guangzhou, the Nansha Futures Financial Big Data Industrial Park is rapidly emerging. As China's first comprehensive futures finance industrial park integrating all key elements, it builds a full financial industry chain centered around the Guangzhou Futures Exchange. The park’s design incorporates Lingnan landscape aesthetics, featuring traditional elements such as cold alleys and arcades, while fully integrating "photovoltaics + architecture" technology. In May 2026, the park’s BIPV project achieved grid connection and power generation. At its core is cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar cell technology, which has been widely applied to rooftops and façades, forming a “power-generating skin” that simultaneously produces electricity and allows natural light transmission. This system seamlessly adapts to double-curved roof surfaces and withstands Lingnan’s humid, hot climate with frequent typhoons. Thanks to CdTe’s superior performance, Building No. 2 at the park became Nansha’s first pilot “zero-carbon building,” generating enough annual electricity to cover its own operational energy consumption—providing a replicable “Greater Bay Area solution” for low-carbon transformation.

Cadmium Telluride: The Core Technology Transforming Buildings from Energy Consumers to Producers

The success of the Nansha Futures Industrial Park is no coincidence. Underlying this achievement is the cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar cell, which, thanks to a series of unique advantages, has become one of the optimal solutions in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).

• First, excellent low-light power generation. CdTe boasts a broader spectral response range, enabling stable power output even under weak light conditions such as cloudy days, haze, or early morning and evening hours. This is particularly significant for regions like Lingnan, where sunlight varies greatly, as well as most urban environments.

• Second, low temperature coefficient results in minimal power loss in high-temperature conditions. Compared to crystalline silicon modules, CdTe experiences less efficiency degradation during summer heat, making it especially suitable for southern and eastern China, where summers are long, hot, and humid.

• Third, extremely low susceptibility to shading and hot-spot effects. Shadows on building façades and roofs are often unavoidable. Under partial shading, CdTe photovoltaic modules suffer far less power loss than crystalline silicon ones and generate almost no destructive hot spots, significantly enhancing system safety and long-term reliability.

• Fourth, customizable appearance enables seamless architectural integration. CdTe thin-film solar cells can flexibly adjust transparency, color, patterns, and dimensions, effectively replacing conventional materials such as curtain wall glass, skylights, and awnings. This realizes the design philosophy of “existence means power generation, power generation means existence.”

These inherent advantages have enabled CdTe to stand out among various photovoltaic technologies, becoming a trusted pathway for large public buildings and landmark structures to achieve zero-carbon operations.

ZOOM SOLAR Green Energy Technology: Focusing on Cadmium Telluride to Drive a Green Future

The success of the Nansha project demonstrates the immense potential of CdTe in zero-carbon construction. ZOOM SOLAR Green Energy Technology is a new materials and clean energy enterprise dedicated to CdTe thin-film solar cells, integrating research and development in thin-film solar cells, advanced semiconductor materials and devices, and industrialization technologies. Committed to advancing the commercialization and large-scale application of this technology, ZOOM SOLAR aims to transform CdTe from being merely “usable” to “widespread,” helping more buildings transition from energy consumers to producers and become nodes in the clean energy network.
